The Enchanted Arrows circling this hat receive their magic from the bolts of lightning zigzagging their way down from the crown. I fell in love with a cowl design from Madeline Tosh called Arrow that I saw on Ravelry. I envisioned a hat, with the arrows getting smaller and smaller while shaping the crown. As the lines got closer together and the arrows got smaller, the result was lightning bolts and enchanted arrows.

R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth a millennia before the Aftercomers. Distinguished from Men and Dwarves, they possessed near immortality. These Elvish Christmas stockings may become immortal as they are passed down from generation to generation becoming treasured heirlooms.

The “Triple Goddess" symbol of waxing, full and waning moon represents the aspects of Maiden, Mother, and Crone. This Feminine Trinity can be found in cultures throughout history. "Anatolian villages in the 7th millennium B.C. worshipped a Goddess in three aspects—as a young woman, a birth-giving matron, and an old woman." ~ (Barbara G. Walker, The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, p. 1018). The slouchy hat begins with a criss-cross rib that emulates the circular curve of the moon, and the symbol for the Triple Goddess circles the hat.

Blue Lotus Scarf/Wrap

A Lotus flower has many symbolic meanings… divine purity and enlightenment in Buddhism, wealth in Hinduism, and rebirth in the ancient Egyptian religion. The Blue Lotus was used to boost the libido in ancient Egypt, and in Egyptian medicine it was used to stimulate blood circulation and to slow the aging process. It was worshiped as a visionary plant and a symbol for the origins of life. Indians and Buddhists highly respected Blue Lotus for its visionary properties. It produces a feeling of well being, euphoria and ecstasy. It is still used as an entheogen today.
The beautiful Lotus Lace pattern comes from Japan and I’ve included a chart for the lace and written instructions if you prefer, with easy directions for changing the width and length, allowing the knitter to knit a scarf or a wrap. The lace looks more complicated than it actually is, a great project for those new to lace but with some experience, and also intermediate lace knitters.

According to Cicely Mary Barker, Flower Fairies are tiny creatures that live in gardens, grassy meadows, and on the edge of distant marshes. When a seed sprouts, a Flower Fairy baby is born, living in their chosen flower. As the flower grows, the fairy grows too. Each is in charge of looking after their flower or plant, keeping it strong and healthy by making sure it has plenty of sunshine and water, sweeping away dead leaves, and polishing flowers and stems.
I designed this Daffodil Fairy because of my love of Fairies and also my love for gardening. It is knit in one piece, except for the arms, legs and wings. Using small amounts of any worsted yarn, it is a great way to use up your stash.

My handmade soap is for sale in 4 varieties...Lavendar, Rosemary Sage, Patchouli, and Cinnamon Orange. And if that is not enough, I also have 4x6" photo mount cards for sale. The photos are from my garden using a macro lens and are mounted on acid and lignin-free embossed cards, blank inside, suitable for gift giving and/or framing. Herringbone Chullo Pattern...new for knitters!

Herringbone describes a distinctive V-shaped pattern usually found in woven twill fabric. Rooted in ancient origins, the herringbone pattern dates back to Egyptian and African cultures where it was used to fashion decorative jewelry and basketry. Today it has many applications including hardwood flooring. It is so named because it resembles the skeleton of a herring fish. Here I have applied it to this Chullo, or earflap hat, for a combining of cultures. The Chullo is a Peruvian style of hat with earflaps made from vicuña, alpaca, llama or sheep's wool. Chullos have been used in the Andean Mountain region since pre-Hispanic times and wearing different types and colors has a significance among the Andean natives. The Herringbone Chullo pattern is available on this blog.

A Hummingbird Rescue

Today a beautiful female Rufous Hummingbird was trapped in our greenhouse. She was exhausted from her attempts to escape, and she just couldn't find her way back out. I was able to catch her with my bare hand as she rested between attempts. Once outside, she rested in my hand for approximately 5 minutes which allowed time for a few photos. Amazingly enough, 20 years ago I rescued 2 hummingbirds within a one week period from similar situations. Each time it has happened I can hardly believe that I am holding such a fragile creature, especially given the fact that they move so fast, and I think that it will never happen again...and then it does!

Victorian Lace Valance Pattern

I have always wanted to knit lace valances for my windows. I thought I would start with a small window in my bathroom before I moved into the dining room which has 3 large windows.I used Araucania Lonco Multy which is a kettle-dyed fingering cotton on a #4 needle. I am very happy with the results. The pattern is very easy to modify for any size window which makes it a "one size fits all" pattern. And I love the yarn, it's gorgeous! I would like to introduce Amelie Escargot, who I knit for my niece Melanie who travels the world. I never travel, so as in the movie "Amelie", Amelie Escargot will travel with Melanie and her boyfriend Morgan, and I will see pictures of her travels. She represents Oregon well, where it rains slugs and snails, and Eugene where we crown a Slug Queen each September during the Eugene Celebration. She will head to Alaska on Monday to begin her journey. I will post photos from Amelie's travels.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Each year we celebrate Cinco de Mayo in honor of my husband Dennis' maternal grandmother, Elise Conde, who came to this country from Sonora, Mexico. Dennis' mother, Marquita Pearman, has wonderful stories to tell of her mother's sense of humor and her love for playing the guitar. She died at the young age of 49 from uterine cancer, so Dennis did not have the pleasure of knowing her. Dennis is an amazing cook and makes a dish called "Puerco Pibil", or slow-roasted pork. We got the recipe from the movie "Once Upon A Time In Mexico", Robert Rodriguez, producer and director of the movie, and his version of this amazing dish...try it, you'll love it! Here you'll find the recipe in written form, can't seem to make it link though...I guess copy and paste into your google bar.

It is not often Alexandra gives me the opportunity to knit for her, so when she does, I really listen to what she wants. She loves to design clothing, and had very specific ideas in mind for this project. The best part is that she loves it now that it's finished and was anxious to wear it. And when it comes to knitting for others, that excitement is what we hope for but do not always see. And I think she looks beautiful in her "Just Sleeves and A Hood".

As knitters knit the "World Peace Hat", I thought it would be interesting not only to see their hats all in one place, but also where everyone is from. After all, peace is on all of our minds all over the world. This beautiful version in pinks and purples was knit by Jenni from South Dakota.

This gorgeous version of the Peace Hat was knit by Adrienne in Gig Harbor, Washington, and is modeled by her beautiful daughter. The corrugated rib is a very pretty addition.

Peace in this world, is it possible? Spreading the message of peace is just one small way to show that you are against war, whether through a song with a powerful message, or knitting peace hats for yourself and others to wear. I am excited because I have knit this hat recently for my sister-in-law Sue who will be leaving soon for a visit to Ireland, and she wanted this hat to wear while there. So cool, my peace hat will travel to Ireland and make it's statement, however small.

Hand Knit Skirt in Euroflax Linen

This skirt was an easy knit in Euroflax Linen. I love the drape this yarn has, it feels wonderful to wear and softens with each washing. And best of all, it is easy to care for as it is machine washable and dryable. It is modeled here by my beautiful daughter Alexandra.

It had been 5 years since our family had been to Bandon. It is so beautiful there that I will never wait that long again. We have always visited during Labor Day weekend in September, and the weather has always cooperated. The beach is sandy with beautiful giant rock outcroppings including Face Rock, tide pools during low tide with plenty of starfish, anenomes and other creatures, and I am always amazed how hardly anyone is on the beach. It was a wonderful 4 days.

The festival is fast approaching and still so much to do. This will be our 28th year putting this event on, which happens to be in our own backyard which is 2.5 acres of forested beauty at the base of the Cascade Mountains. It is a beautiful setting for outdoor music, great food, and awesome friends and family who join us. The Pears will be playing and will feature Alexandra, our daughter, on bari sax. Our son Zach plays drums in Pleasant Swill. We are hoping for cooler weather this year...last year we had a record scorcher of 108 degrees, although by afternoon we are drenched in the shade of Douglas and Grand Firs well over 100 years old.

Year Round Gardening

We have a 16 x 30' greenhouse that we have always wanted to build a raised bed inside of so that we could garden all year. This spring we finally did it! The bed is 18' 9" long by 3' 9" wide, with a height close to 3 feet above ground, perfect for sitting on the sides while working in the bed or just enjoying the ambiance of the greenhouse. We are currently harvesting many varieties of lettuce, bok choy, collards, spinach, mustard greens, and several varieties of tomatoes are going crazy, along with eggplant, peppers, walla walla sweet onions, cabbage and dill.

Yesterday I completed my Lizard Ridge Afghan, I absolutely love it. It was a joy to knit and I loved the creative aspect of it. It reminds me of water flowing, sunsets on oceans, sandy beaches, coral reefs, deep ocean bottoms, mountains with streams meandering thru them, gently rolling hills, nature ever changing, constantly in motion which in turn helped me with my color selection. I am happy that I came upon this pattern designed by Laura Aylor, and can be found at http://www.knitty.com/ in the Fall 2006 collection. I highly recommend this pattern to anyone who loves to knit with color ♥
